The Reynolds-Lively couple are having a stellar month. Over the weekend, Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively both enjoyed major successes at the box office. Reynolds’ “Deadpool & Wolverine” had maintained a strong presence for three weeks, while Lively’s “It Ends with Us” made a notable debut. Both films have reached significant milestones without needing to compete in two dimensions.
The Marvel film, which reunites Reynolds’ “Deadpool” with Hugh Jackman’s “Wolverine”, pulled in an estimated $54 million domestically and has brought its total to $494 million, according to Comscore. Globally, it has now crossed the $1 billion mark, making it the unconventional film of 2024 to reach this milestone, following Pixar’s “Inside Out 2”.
Meanwhile, the film adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s bestseller “It Ends with Us” opened with $50 million domestically and added $30 million internationally, for a total of $80 million worldwide. Lively stars as Lily Bloom, a flower shop owner navigating a complex relationship with neurosurgeon Kyle Kincaid, as well as with her past love, Atlas Corrina Brandon, challenging her decision making.
Lively and Reynolds are celebrating their successes together. Lively praised Reynolds for his role in writing an unforgettable rooftop scene in “It Ends with Us”, while she made a brief appearance in “Deadpool & Wolverine” as an alternate version of Reynolds’ character, alongside their daughters, Inez and Olin.
Elsewhere, “Twisters” continued its successful run, adding $15 million to its original total of $222 million. The film, featuring Glen Powell, Daisy Edgar Jones, and Anthony Ramos, had accumulated $310 million worldwide in just four weeks.
In contrast, “Borderlands” underperformed, earning only $8.8 million domestically and $16.5 million globally. This film, based on the popular video game, stars Jamie Lee Curtis, Kevin Hart, Ariana Greenblatt, and Jack Black, and was envisioned by director Eli Roth to capture the game’s chaotic essence.
Finally, “Despicable Me 4” remained steady, earning an additional $8 million in its sixth week. The film had grossed $330 million domestically and $807 million globally, continuing the success of Illumination’s beloved franchise.
